ENTREVISTA a // Interview to... AUSTIN KEEN!

Austin es el actual campeón de la UST, tras su victoria en el circuito de 2013, pero más allá de eso, él es un skimmer especial, que vive por y para el skim y que procura ser feliz, transmitiendo felicidad a través de lo que hace.

Pasa los días creando nuevas maniobras y procurando dar un salto de calidad a la forma de skimmar. Domina dos tipos de drops, todo tipo de olas y muchísimos trucos y movimientos y todo el mundo del skim le respeta por ello, pero sobretodo tiene ese respeto por ser una de esas personas que cae bien a todos.

Puede gustarte más o menos su estilo, pero de lo que no hay duda es que Austin Keen es un pro ejemplar!

1. ¿Qué edad tienes ? 23

3. ¿Cuál es el significado de SKIMBOARDGINA para ti? No sólo una palabra... Hablamos de sentimientos!

Bob marley habla a través de su música y su estilo de vida, también me gusta crear música, pero yo hablo a través de mi skim y las olas. Es un propósito. Es un estilo de vida. Es mi misión.

4. ¿Cuánto llevas skimmando? ¿Puedes recordar cuándo empezaste?

Empecé con una tabla de madera plana en los charcos que dejaba la marea llena en la isla. Tenía 11 años de edad. Descubrí cómo pillar las olas sobre un skimboard cuando tenía, más o menos, 13 años.

5. Y su primera ola?

Mis primeras olas fueron surfeando, pero nunca olvidaré la primera vez que pillé una ola de 30 centímetros con la tabla de skim. Se siente como si hubiera sido más de 1 metro.

6. Recuerdas la mejor ola que hayas pillado?

Esta es una pregunta imposible de responder. Cada vez que estoy en una ola épica, se siente como si fuera mi mejor ola. Por eso sólo hay que buscar la siguiente mejor.

7. ¿Cuál es tu spot preferido?

Me encanta la playa de Laguna , ya que tiene muchos spots... Los siders de Aliso y West Street. Wraps en Aliso. Oak Street para sesiones suaves. Los siders de 10th St en verano…

8. ¿Cuál es tu tabla favorita de tu quiver?

Mi Exile MS Pro Model. La uso para todo, incluso para surfear sin quillas.

9. ¿Puede explicar los detalles de tu promodel?

Es la mejor tabla para todas las condiciones, ya que tiene las medidas de ancho y rocker exactos y tiene el shape perfecto. No muchísmo, pero si es manejable. Flota bien, sostiene el impulso, y encuentra el pocket de la ola. He usado muchas tablas, y para mí, es la perfecta.

10. ¿Qué países has podido visitar gracias al skim?

Estoy muy agradecido por los viajes de mi vida. Agradezco al skimboarding por todos mis viajes. Filipinas , Australia , Japón, México , Chile , Brasil y espero que muchos más estén por venir!

11. ¿Cuál ha sido tu mejor viaje?

Es tan difícil de decir… Cada viaje es muy emocionante. Todos los países y las culturas son diferentes conmovedores. Incluso aunque las olas no sean grandes, conocer los skimboarders de esos países es siempre genial.

Algo especial. Componer música o promocionar la vida sana y natural.

14. ¿Qué sientes ahora que tu primer título UST es una realidad?

Stoked! Conseguido. Éxito. He invertido un montón de tiempo en el perfeccionamiento de lo que hago y finalmente, dio sus frutos.

15. ¿Estás viviendo del skimboard? El skimboarding es suficiente para que los riders profesionales puedan vivir de ello?
Sí. Yo no tengo mucho dinero. Vivo muy simple. Pero es suficiente para mí, para vivir cómodamente. Mi trabajo es skimboarding!

16 . ¿Conoces el skim en Europa? Y en España? Movimiento... Riders... Tablas...?

No sé demasiado, pero creo que eso hará que sea más emocionante cuando vaya a visitaros.

17 . ¿Sabes algo de Gorgonitas skim o GORGOSKIM.com?

Sí, por supuesto, es una web épica para ver todas las últimas noticias de skimboard.

18 . ¿Cuándo vienes a España? ¿Te gusta?

Me encantaría ir a España. Mañana?!

Austin Keen is the current champion of the UST, after his victory in the 2013 circuit, but apart from that, he is an special skimmer, who lives and breathes the skim and manages to be happy transmitting happiness throughout what he does.

Spends the journeys creating new maneuvers and trying push a step forward the quality of skimming. He skills two kinds of drops, different kinds of waves and a lot of tricks and movements and the whole little skim community respect him for that, but furthermore he has this respect because people just like him.

His style can be of your liking or not, but there is no doubt that Austin Keen it’s an exemplary pro!

1. How old are you? 23

3. What is the mean of skimboarding for you?

Not only a word… I asking for your feelings! Bob marley speaks through his music and lifestyle, I also enjoy creating music, but I speak through my skimboarding and waveriding. It's purpose. it's a lifestyle. It's my mission.

4. How long you do skimboarding?

Can you remember when you started? I started on a flat wooden board on the sand and tide pools of the island. I was 11 years old. I figured out how to ride a waves on a skimboard at about 13 years old.

5. And your first wave?

My first waves were surfing, but I'll never forget the first time I made a 1 foot wave feel like it was 4ft by riding it on my skimboard.

6. Best wave ever than you have riding?

This is impossible question. everytime i get an epic wave, it feels like my best wave. Then I just look for the next best one.

7. What is your favorite spot?

I love Laguna beach because it has many spots. Aliso siders and west street siders. Aliso wraps. Oak Street for mellow sessions. 10th st siders in the summer.

8. What is your favorite board of your quiver?

My MS exile Pro Model. I use it for everything. even when surfing finless. 9. Can you explain details of your promodel? It's the best board for all conditions because it has the right amount of width and rocker and has the perfect shape, but not too much so it's stil very maneuverable. It floats well, Holds momentum, and finds the right pocket of the wave. I've rode many boards, and to me, it's the perfect skimboard.

10. Which countries have been able to travel thanks to skim?

I'm most thankful for travels in my life. I thank Skimboarding for all my travels. Philippines, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, and hopefully many more to come!

11. What has been your best trip?

It is so hard to say, every trip is so very exciting. every country and culture is so different and exciting. even if the waves are not great, the skimboarders of the countries are always so awesome.

Something epic. Creating music, promoting natural healthy living. 14. What do you feel about it when your UST first tittle is real? Stoked! Accomplished. Success. I've put lots of time in perfecting what I do, and finally paid off.

15. Are you living of the skimboarding?

Is the skimming enough for living for a pro riders? Yes. I don't have much money. I live very simple. But It is enough for me to live comfortably. My job is skimboarding!

16. You know the skim in Europe? And in Spain? Movement… Riders… Boards…?

I don't know much about the area, but I think that will make it more exciting when I come to visit.

I would love to go to Spain. Tomorrow?!

San Sebastian by GEO BRYAN

Durante estos dos últimos años, he formado parte de un equipo de retransmisión a través de internet del Big Wave World Tour. Miramos cada invierno las previsiones de surf en busca de una mancha lila que se forme en medio del oceáno. Esta particular mancha, u oleaje, apareció en las previsiones en el Oceano Atlántico hará 12 días. Se esperaba muy grande, enorme, pero lo más importante, las condiciones iban a ser glassy. Una semana mas tarde llegó lo esperado. Todo parecía apuntar al País Vasco, en un spot de surf llamado Punta Galea.

Desafortunadamente, no todo en el viaje iba a empezar tan glassy como las previsiones. Cuando llegamos a Londres, nos dijeron que el productor de la web de retransmisión en vivo no podía volar a España porqué su pasaporte caducaba antes de que transcurrieran tres meses de nuestra llegada al País Vasco. Nuestra pequeña expedición tenía que afrontar el viaje sin él. A menos que… el pudiera cruzar el Canal de la Mancha en tren, hacer transbordo en París hacía Burdeos, y de ahí alquilar un coche con el que cruzar a España para poder llegar a Bilbao. Todo esto tenía que hacerse en un tiempo de 24 horas para que el Campeonato pudiera ser retransmitido. Lo montamos todo sin el JEFE, y él consiguió llegar a la mañana siguiente con dos horas de ventaja. Una rápida siesta y ya estábamos retransmitiendo en vivo una épica jornada de surf de olas enormes.

La jornada siguiente iba a ser el día más corto del año por lo que a las 8 de la mañana todavía era de noche, estaba ameneciendo cuando un amigo local llegó al hotel. Tan solo pude hablar con Ursi pocos minutos antes de nuestro encuentro matutino en el que teníamos organizada una sesión con una tabla con la que yo pudiera disfrutar. Hablé con Gorgonitas Skim antes de partir hacia España y ellos me guiaron a un grupo de skimmers del País Vasco de Facebook, los cuales eran tan solo 10 personas. En cuanto el sol empezó a brillar en el cielo durante nuestra hora de viaje, eché un vistazo con asombro a la campiña pintoresca. El País Vasco es uno de los lugares más bonitos que he visitado jamás, además de que el clima iba a hacer de ese día una de esas jornadas espectaculares.

De camino a San Sebastián, empezaba a estar ansioso de empezar la sesión de skim, pero encontrar buenas olas en mi único día de exploración parecía improbable. Estuve allí hace unos tres años, durante un tour con Exile, pero no hubo buenas olas y había demasiada arena para realizar una buena sesión. Tan solo la belleza de la ciudad ya hizo que la jornada mereciera la pena, pero a menudo me venían deseos de surfear un buen sider. Cuando nos detuvimos, las cosas no podían ir mejor. El viento era offshore, las líneas chocaban contra la pared y la marea estaba alta, para bajar durante las siguientes dos horas. La persona con la que debíamos encontrarnos ya estaba allí apoyado en su coche con mi tabla en sus manos, sonriendo mientras se encendía un cigarro. El agua estaba a unos 13 grados, así que nos pegamos unas carreras bajo la sombra de la pared para calentar un poco. Hice mi primer take off para tomar el sider que de un chasquido me bateó hacia el lado contrario haciéndome cruzar la playa, totalmente en pie, con una gran sonrisa en mi cara. Me bajé de la tabla, miré a Ursi y los dos lanzamos un "shaka" el uno al otro al mismo tiempo. Los dos estábamos un paso más allá de estar alucinados de estar surfeando el sider en el “Pico del Loro”. Skimamos las siguientes pocas horas que nos quedaban sin hablar mucho, girando olas, pillando siders y manteniéndonos calientes. Cuando la marea bajó, nos dirigimos al pueblo para disfrutar de una épica y tradicional comida de tapas y cerveza.

Nuestra siguiente parada de la jornada fue de vuelta a Bilbao hacia el legendario spot de Mundaka. Nos encontramos allí con el resto de skimmers, disfrutamos de la abarrotada perfecta ola de izquierdas hasta que el atardecer cayó sobre nosotros y gozamos de un homenaje más a España. De camino a casa el viento empezó a soplar y una tormenta mostraba sus primeros avisos. Al día siguiente teníamos temprano un avión que coger, que casi no puede despegar por culpa del fuerte viento. Hacia el final de nuestro corto viaje ya nos habíamos marcado unas olas, salido de fiesta con leyendas del surf de olas enormes y experimentado la maravillosa y bonita hospitalidad que el País Vasco puede ofrecer. En el vuelo a casa, tuve bastante tiempo para reflexionar en como todo esto ha podido hacerse posible y me di cuenta de lo que significa formar parte de un pequeño grupo de gente que desea ayudar a otros a compartir lo alucinante del skimboarding.

For the past two years, I have been part of the webcast team that broadcasts the Big Wave World Tour live around the world. Every winter we check the surf charts for one of those purple blobs that form in the middle of the ocean. This particular blob, or swell, showed up on the charts in the Atlantic Ocean about 12 days ago. It was going to be big, real big, but more importantly, the conditions were going to be super clean. A week later, the call was made. It was all systems go in the Basque Country of Spain at a surf spot called Punta Galea.

Unfortunately, not everything about the trip would start out as clean as the forecast. When we got to London, we were told that the producer of the webcast could not fly into Spain because his passport expired within three months of our arrival. Our already small crew would have to go on without him. Unless… He could cross the English Channel by train, catch another train from Paris to Bordeaux, and then rent a car to cross into Spain and eventually reach Bilboa. All this had to be done in time to make it to the contest within 24 hours. We set up all day without the boss, and he made it the next morning with two hours to spare. A quick cat nap and we were live for an epic day of big wave surfing.

The following day was the shortest day of the year and it was still pitch black at 8am when a local friend arrived at the hotel. I had only spoken to Ursi for a few minutes prior to our morning rendezvous where we had arranged for a session and a board for me to ride. I reached out to Gorgonitas Skim before I left to Spain, and they pointed me towards a group of Basque Country skimboarders on facebook, which were only about 10 strong. As the sunrise opened up the sky on our hour long drive, I looked around in awe at the picturesque countryside. The Basque Country is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and you could already tell that the weather was going to make for an amazing day.

On the way to San Sebastian, I was holding onto high hopes of getting in a skim session, but catching good waves on my one and only day to explore seemed improbable. I was there three years earlier on an Exile Tour, but there was no swell and way too much sand to get a session. The beauty of the town alone made that an amazing visit, but I often wished I could come back and get a chance to ride the sidewash. When we pulled up, things couldn’t have looked any better. The wind was offshore, lines were bouncing off the wall, and the tide was a bit high and dropping for the next few hours. The person we were meeting was already there standing by his car with my board in hand, smiling while lighting up a smoke. The water was a chilly 57 degrees, so we all took a few speed runs to get warmed up beneath the shadow of the wall. I went for my first sider and got a snap right off the bat and took it across the beach straight legged, standing tall, with a big smile on my face. I stepped off and looked up at Ursi and we both threw a shaka at each other at the same time. We were both beyond stoked to be catching the sider at “Piko de Loro”. We skimmed the next few hours without saying much, taking turns, catching siders, and staying warm. When the tide dropped we walked along the boardwalk into town to sightsee and enjoy an epic traditional lunch of tapas and beer.

The next stop on our journey was back toward Bilboa to the legendary surf spot, Mudaka. We met up with the rest of the crew and enjoyed the crowded perfect left until the sun set on us and we enjoyed one more salute to Spain. On our way home the wind began to whistle and a storm began to move in. The next day we had an early plane to catch and barely got out of the airport because of the strong winds. By the end of our quick trip we had scored waves, partied with big wave legends, and experienced the amazing beauty and hospitality that the Basque Country had to offer. On the flight home, I had plenty of time to reflect on how this all came to be and realize what it means to be part of a small group of people that are willing to help each other out to share the stoke of skimboarding.

La historia se repite. Otra vuelta a casa por Navidad celebrada en Mataró. Esta vez era Martí el que volvía a Barcelona para pasar las vacaciones que cierran el año y las olas, otro año más, vuelven a estar presentes en estas fechas.

Yet again, history is repeating itself. Coming back home for Christmas this time celebrated in Mataró. Martí came back to Barcelona to spend the winter holidays and the waves, once again, appeared for these dates.
